1. Restart Your Computer

It sounds almost too simple, but start with a restart.

Many people leave their computers running for days or even weeks at a time. During that time, programs, browser tabs, updates, and background processes can pile up.

Restarting Windows clears active memory, closes processes that may have become stuck, and gives the operating system a fresh start.

There is also an important difference between closing a laptop lid and actually restarting the computer. Closing the lid usually puts the computer to sleep. It does not necessarily clear everything that has been running.

If your computer suddenly feels slower than normal, restart it before making more complicated changes.

If performance improves dramatically after every restart but quickly becomes slow again, that can also be a clue that a background program or software issue needs attention.

2. Disable Programs You Don't Need at Startup

One of the best ways to speed up a Windows PC is to reduce the number of programs that automatically start when Windows loads.

Over time, software tends to add itself to startup. You may have cloud storage apps, messaging programs, game launchers, printer utilities, update services, and other programs loading before you even use them.

Individually, they may not seem like a big deal. When several launch at the same time, they can noticeably increase startup time and use memory in the background.

In Windows, you can review startup applications through Task Manager or the Startup Apps section of Windows Settings.

Before disabling something, make sure you know what it is. Security software, hardware utilities, and certain system services may need to remain enabled.

3. Close Unnecessary Background Programs

Your desktop may look empty while dozens of processes are still running behind the scenes.

All of those programs compete for your computer's resources.

Open Task Manager and look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns. If one application is consistently using a large amount of resources, it may be contributing to the slowdown.

Don't randomly end unfamiliar Windows processes. Some are required for the operating system to work correctly.

Windows also includes built-in storage tools that can help identify temporary files and other data that may no longer be needed.

Be careful when manually deleting folders. Removing the wrong files can damage applications or cause Windows problems.

The goal is not to delete everything you can find. It is to safely remove unnecessary clutter while keeping important documents, photos, applications, and system files intact.

5. Uninstall Programs You No Longer Use

Take a look at the programs installed on your computer.

You may be surprised by how many you no longer use.

Old games, trial software, manufacturer utilities, outdated tools, and applications installed for one specific task may still be taking up storage or running background services.

Removing programs you genuinely do not use can free storage and reduce unnecessary activity.

However, avoid uninstalling programs simply because you do not recognize their names. Some unfamiliar software may be related to Windows, hardware drivers, security programs, or other applications.

When in doubt, find out what the program does before removing it.

6. Check for Malware and Unwanted Software

7. Update Windows and Your Drivers

Updates sometimes get blamed for computer problems, but keeping Windows properly updated is still important for security, compatibility, bug fixes, and overall system reliability.

Open Settings and check Windows Update for pending updates.

After installing updates, restart the computer if Windows asks you to.

Drivers are important too. Drivers allow Windows to communicate with hardware such as your graphics adapter, Wi-Fi hardware, motherboard components, printers, and other devices.

9. Check Whether Your Computer Is Overheating

Software isn't always the reason a computer runs slowly.

Heat can affect performance too.

Processors are designed to protect themselves when temperatures become too high. If your computer cannot cool itself properly, it may reduce performance to control heat.

You may have a cooling problem if the fans constantly sound like they are running at full speed, your laptop becomes unusually hot, performance gets worse after the computer has been running for a while, or the computer unexpectedly shuts down.

How to Speed Up a Windows PC Without Installing Cleaner Software

You may have seen advertisements promising to make your computer dramatically faster with a single click.

Be careful with those claims.

You usually don't need several different “PC cleaner,” “RAM booster,” “registry cleaner,” and “speed optimizer” programs installed at the same time.

Ironically, adding more optimization software can sometimes mean adding more programs that start with Windows and run in the background.

A better approach is to identify what is actually causing the slowdown.

Start with Windows' built-in tools. Check startup programs, Task Manager, available storage, Windows Update, and installed applications.

If there is still a problem, investigate the underlying cause instead of installing random programs and hoping one of them fixes it.

Why Is My Windows PC Still Slow After Cleaning It?

This is where computer troubleshooting becomes important.

If you've removed temporary files, disabled unnecessary startup applications, restarted Windows, and freed storage but the computer still feels slow, the problem may be somewhere else.

For example, the computer could have insufficient RAM, a failing drive, overheating hardware, damaged Windows files, unwanted software, or simply hardware that is no longer powerful enough for the programs you're trying to run.

How Can I Tell What's Slowing Down My PC?

Task Manager is one of the best places to start.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open it and look at CPU, Memory, Disk, and running processes.

If CPU usage stays extremely high, find out which application is responsible.

If memory is almost completely used during normal work, you may have too many programs open or not enough RAM.

If disk usage remains unusually high for long periods, storage performance or background activity may need investigation.

Also pay attention to when the problem happens.

Does the computer only run slowly right after startup? Does it slow down when your browser is open? Does performance get worse after the computer has been running for an hour?

Should You Reset Windows to Make Your PC Faster?

Resetting Windows can help in certain situations, but it should not be your first troubleshooting step.

A Windows reset is a much bigger change than disabling a startup program or cleaning temporary files.

Before resetting the computer, make sure important files are properly backed up and understand what applications, settings, and data may be affected.

More importantly, resetting Windows will not fix every performance problem.

If the real cause is overheating, insufficient RAM, a failing storage drive, or other hardware trouble, reinstalling Windows may leave you with the same slow computer afterward.

When Is It Time to Replace a Slow Computer?

Sometimes improving the existing computer makes sense. Sometimes it doesn't.

But if the computer is extremely old, cannot support the software you need, has multiple failing components, or would cost almost as much to upgrade as a newer machine, replacement may be the better choice.
